In the past few weeks #Freshtake had a take on how self-respect makes others respect you.

This week I’d like for us to address respect for our elderly.

Strange enough earlier this week I shared a conversation about how elderly are mostly dumped into old age homes and forgotten about.
This is one way I feel their children lack respect for their parents.

I firmly believe in respecting the elderly, young people need to remember that we won’t last forever. Most of us will live to grow old and frail and be in need of care, love, respect, etc.

Based on what I have seen happen, youth see elderly as a burden. We need to begin to see our elders for what they really are. Having lost a very dear elderly to me recently, made me realise more that elderly are the knowledge banks of our traditions and cultures, they also always have wise words to share. Just pay attention and listen carefully.

They fill an important role within our communities. If I had to define respect, I would say it’s the treatment I give to others that I’d like back in return.
