THE late Terry Pratchett, arguably one of the greatest authors of recent times, had many things to say about cats.

“Cats have a way of always having been there even if they’ve only just arrived,” he once wrote. “They move in their own personal time. They act as if the human world is one they just happened to have stopped off in, on their way to somewhere that is possibly a whole lot more interesting…”

Theologian and physician, Albert Schweizer, described cats as one of the “two means of refuge from the miseries of life.”

While kittens have the cuteness factor going for them when looking for a home, adopting older cats comes with many benefits of its own.
One of these benefits is that most older cats surrendered to the SPCA for whatever reason, have been housetrained and won’t take much time to become accustomed to their new homes. It’s fairly rare for an older cat to still need litter-box training.

This handsome and friendly male cat was one of three surrendered to the SPCA by its owner.

Adult cats are usually much better around children and are more accustomed to interacting with humans. Older cats are also generally calmer and more relaxed than kittens. When you adopt an older cat, what you see is, more often than not, what you get. You know how big your cat will be, what it likes or dislikes, and all of the unique things about its personality.

Babsie Slabbert bonds with a magnificent black and white male cat, surrendered by his owner. Judging by his healthy stature and friendly nature, this cat was well looked after before he was given up.

Older cats generally have the lowest adoption rates at animal shelters so, if you’re looking to adopt, consider making a difference in the life of an older cat and giving them a loving home.

One of three male cats given up by their owner, this cat’s exquisite colouring certainly makes him stand out.

Pratchett fans who have read his 1988 novel, Sourcery, may recall another of his quotes about cats in the scene where Ipslore debates the fate of his son with Death in his final moments:

“I meant,” said Ipslore bitterly, “what is there in this world that makes living worthwhile?”
Death thought about it. “CATS,” he said eventually, “CATS ARE NICE…”

“Despite rumour, Death isn’t cruel – merely terribly, terribly good at his job.”
