Farewell, Jenny Seegers, and rest in peace

“DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING, said Death. JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH.” - Terry Pratchett, Good Omens.

RETIRED Vryheid Herald office manager, Jenny Seegers, passed away on June 1.

Following a long, courageous battle with illness, our beloved Jenny is at peace.

To say that Jenny was just the office manager would be an understatement of mammoth proportions. Jenny was so much more. For a little over 26 years, Jenny was the proofreader, the censor, the thesaurus, the debtors and creditors clerk, the bookkeeper and the all round mother hen at the Vryheid Herald until her retirement in 2014, as well as an avid reader and a great fan of the late Terry Pratchett.

“No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away – until the clock wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone’s life, they say, is only the core of their actual existence.” – Terry Pratchett, Reaper Man.

In the grand scheme of things, we are all just infinitesimal drops in an enormous sea of humanity, but Jenny made lasting ripples in the lives of those who had the privilege of working with her with her wit, her wisdom and her refreshing sense of humour, despite her failing health.

Aside from her role of well-respected matriarch at the newspaper, Jenny was a wife to Neville, a mother to Warren, Ryan and Ashley and a much loved grandmother to her grandchildren.

When Jenny retired as the Vryheid Herald’s office manager in July of 2014, Vryheid Herald Editor at the time, John Carnegie, said that “the Vryheid Herald, in effect, recorded the history of Vryheid in convenient weekly editions, and that by being part of the newspaper Jenny was now also part of the history of Vryheid, and would not be forgotten.”
John’s words ring true now more than ever and we can safely say that Jenny will forever remain a part of our history at the Herald that will not be forgotten.

Farewell, Jenny Seegers, and rest in peace.

Jenny’s husband, Neville, has requested that anyone who would like to send flowers, please make a donation to the SPCA instead.
