‘Damning’ accusations on social media – Mayor speaks out

This week, Mayor Afzul Rehman talks about social media etiquette and accessibility, strike action by municipal staff, and ward councillor issues.

Q: Mayor: Please sir can u tell us what is the correct procedure to go about to lodge an inquiry when there is something u need to report that is wrong in ur ward? We have been trying to contact our ward counsellor but they never answer their phone in ward 25 and we not sure hw to get hold of the speaker to force the counsellor to please help us?

A: 034 328 7600 will get you the speaker’s office, chief whip or my office.

Q: Mr Mayor thank you for your intervention with the electricity bills and seeing to it that the errors with average readings are being sorted out. I have noticed in recent weeks that social media is very damning with people accusing the municipality of not being transparent and even calling you out to answer on social media. I know there exist laws for how accountable you and other normal people are on social media. Please tell me when it comes to situations like this, do you feel it is always in your best interests to engage with the community this way? Eric

A: I agree that people make comments that are either rude, damning or simply just outright accusations. However, I always believe in being accessible and therefore even my cell number is available to public. This is being abused by just a handful of people, and I intend suing one or two of them to set the record straight, so that others can enjoy the accessibility that is needed to get answers on basic issues.

Q: Mayor sir with the hotter it becomes more of a problem when garbage is not collected. For the past 2 wks there have issues with late or even no collection of garbage in certain areas. I live in hutten heights and garbage is still there. It smells very bad and stray dogs have ripped some of the black bin bags open. When the people came to collect the rubbish eventually they took the bags but left most of the filth where it was on the roads and pavements. What can be done about this?

A: This was because of a strike action by staff, hopefully this matter is now resolved.
