Newcastle welcome for Gandhi walkers

Despite the setbacks, including roadworks, uneven road surfaces, trucks and few sidewalks, Mr Maharaj believed the walkers had fared well.

They walk in the historic footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and on Friday and Saturday, the peace walkers from Rising Sun Lenasia and the Gandhi Development Trust became part of the Newcastle community.

This was their sixth stop on a journey of 750 kilometres.

Rising Sun CEO, Vijay Maharaj said the heat had been almost unbearable at times, and portions of the journey had been up to 12 hours long.

“We have had some challenges, such as blisters, which we have to treat every day.”

Despite the setbacks, including roadworks, uneven road surfaces, trucks and few sidewalks, Mr Maharaj believed the walkers had fared well.

In addition, communities had supported them well throughout.

“The walk will be completed on October 2, which is also the birth date of Mahatma Gandhi.”

After liaising with the community on Friday, the walkers continued their march to Dundee and beyond, and will end at the Mahatma Gandhi settlement in Inanda, Durban.
