How does one measure the best?

For our list of the top video games of all time, across all franchises, our criterion was solely the number of copies sold.

Tetris

A rebooted edition for mobile devices, Electronic Arts’ Tetris tops the list with a ballpark 100-million copies sold and downloaded. Guess everyone loves building stuff.

Wii Sports

Originally released with the Wii console in 2006, this funky sport ‘simulator’ is a chart-topper for the single platform best-selling game, reaching close to 83-million sales worldwide as of this year.

Minecraft

Beware the creepers! This cute little blocky game surpassed 70-million sales, perhaps because people love making stuff and want to be miners. Congratulations, Notch.

Grand Theft Auto V

Rude, violent and uncensored – that’s why we love the GTA franchise. The rest of the world does too, considering 52-million copies sold and seven Guiness World Records broken in the process.

Super Mario Bros.

Old-school doesn’t mean outdated. Hailing back to the mid-80s, this classic held the single platform best-seller crown for close to 30 years and proved retro is still engaging.

Mario Kart Wii

Throwing Mario and friends onto the motorsport scene, this game has achieved sales of over 36-million and is considered the best-selling racing video game of all time.

Tetris (1989)

Yup, this franchise is so popular it’s games made the list TWICE. The original game, developed in Russia and developed for Game Boy, has 35-million copies sold. Nasdarovje!

Wii Sports Resort

The successor to number two on our list, the expanded sport simulator has reached in the region of 33-million in sales, proving we all want to be sports heroes without leaving the lounge.

New Super Mario Bros.

Released in 2006 on Nintendo DS, this cracker boasts 2,5-dimensional graphics and introduced a few new features into the classic scenario. Even better, you can (secretly) play as Luigi!
