5 tips on how to deal with unexpected guests this Christmas

Here are 5 tips that should make it easier for you to handle the sudden onslaught and ensuing chaos.

They come in the night. They walk straight up to the front door. They knock and you answer.

But when you open the door, it was not at all the person you were expecting. Or even worse, it’s someone you were expecting with someone you don’t know at all.

When an unexpected guest arrives at your home you can very easily lose the plot completely. Suddenly there is an extra person or persons you didn’t make provision for, or it’s someone you really don’t want around.

How do you deal with a situation like this?

Here are 5 tips that should make it easier for you to handle the sudden onslaught and ensuing chaos.

5. Keep it clean

clean

Whether you are expecting any guests or not, people have a habit of just dropping by over the festive season. Jump in and do a major spring clean at the beginning of the month, and then clean as you go to keep your home sparkling and fresh. This ensures you don’t have to scramble to hide empty pizza boxes or quickly vacuum the rug when someone arrives unannounced.

4. They are more scared of you, than you are of them

SCARED

If you are hosting a party and one of your guests brings along a partner without telling you, remember: This person is probably just as ill at ease as you are. Don’t let on anything, and try making the person comfortable. Later in the evening, pull the offending family member or friend to one side and give them a piece of your mind.

3. Cook for an army

Inviting a ‘few’ friends over for dinner? Make sure you cook for at least three extra people. If you are having a good old South African braai, keep a braai pack or two handy in the fridge. Always make sure you have a odd bottle of wine or spirits hidden away too; that way it can look like you were expecting lots of people all along.

2. When in doubt, leave it out

Posted an invite to Facebook and not sure how many people are actually going to pitch? It’s all about foresight – keep in mind your house could turn into the party venue of the year, so make sure to have some snacks and extra plates close by. Don’t cater for a specific amount of people, that way you won’t feel silly when you don’t have enough plates.

1. Party planning pays

Wedding-RSVP-Etiquette

If you are planning on hosting a little shindig, set up a list which specifically requires an RSVP before a certain date. Specify that guests must inform you if they feel like bringing along a partner – this will eliminate the possibility of more mouths then you can feed. However, always keep the first four tips in mind!
