We have all been there. That one place with the really weird name, the name that makes you ask: “What were they thinking?”
Well, whether it be by pure mistake or if the words meant something different way back when, we’ve searched the internet and found the top ten towns with the funniest names. England and America came out full force in this one.
Apparently the Brits have a sense of humour, and the Americans are suckers for a good punch line.
Brace yourselves folks, and imagine filling some of these addresses in on an application form:
1. Penistone, South Yorkshire, England
We had no words. We were too busy laughing.
2. Bird-in-Hand, Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the United States
The picture explains it better than we ever could. Wait, what?
3. Hell, Michigan, United States
Could you imagine if it was a popular tourist destination? “Hi mom, I’m off to Hell for the holidays!”. The name actually has a rather interesting origin, but we were too busy making ‘Hell’ puns to Google it.
4. Accident, Maryland, United States
We were thinking they accidentally spelled the name of the town wrong. Apparently, accidents like that happen all the time.
5. Boring, Oregon, United States
Yawn. Sorry, we dozed off before we could find out what happens in Boring.
6. Intercourse, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania in the United States
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. These guys obviously took the naming of their town seriously. The unveiling of the town welcome sign must have been a real hoot.
7. Crapstone, United Kingdom
Okay, okay, these puns are going down the drain.
8. Crotch Crescent, United Kingdom
Good luck getting the lady at the bank to believe you have written your legitimate street address.
9. Dildo, Newfoundland, Canada
How about some bacon with that? This town was named in 1711, long before modern society attributed the name to a rather phallic toy. The exact origins of the name is still under dispute.
And last, but certainly not least:
10. Middelfart, Denmark
We now comprehend where the term ‘Dutch Oven’ originated.
