DAYesterday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) had permission to march in Johannesburg. Marching is a democratic right, it’s part of a healthy democracy whether you want to protest or promote. That the supporters of the ANC, the ruling party, made the DA’s march impossible, is alarming. Thuggery, threats of violence, actual violence, intimidation, led the DA to decide that the risk to its marchers was not worth it, and they called off the march. The DA were the losers, yes, but democracy was the bigger loser. Every one of us in South Africa lost something yesterday, taken away from us by ANC supporters.
