Soccer and netball for the youth of Ladysmith

The event saw the best under 13 clubs and schools competing against one another in the name of sports development

Ladysmith Build-It, in partnership with SAFA Alfred Duma LFA and Alfred Duma Local Municipality, held a sports tournament at the AG Magubane Stadium in Steadville on Saturday.

The draw and launch took place at the Settlers Park sports grounds, where media, stakeholders and teams gathered in preparation for the games.

The event saw the best under 13 clubs and schools competing against one another in the name of sports development.

The Department of Health was also part of the tournament, screening children and educating them about TB and HIV/AIDS. The event slogan was ‘To Be Against Social Ills’.

Alfred Duma Local Municipality sports officer Mr Maphisa emphasised that the municipal sports offices fully support the programme. Mr Themba Phiri, SAFA president for the uThukela District, mentioned that their vision for 2022 is for local clubs to play with PSL developments to build more junior Thamsanqa Gabuzas for the region.

Scouts from AmaZulu looked for the star players.

Peacemakers ended up winning the soccer tournament. The exciting final against Napoli FC went down to the wire, needing a penalty shoot-out to determine the winning team.

There was a good turnout of netball girls and the winning school was Sidingulwazi Primary.

Hundreds of supporters attended the event, with Mayor Vincent Madlala also in attendance on Saturday.

All the winners were as follows: netball ‘player of the tournament’ – Hadebe Hlanzeko (trophy and school fees for the whole year paid); soccer ‘player of the tournament’ – Siphelele Mazibuko (trophy, Build-It sports bag, school fees for the whole year paid, and invited to train with AmaZulu FC under 13 in Durban); netball runners-up – Umhlanganyelwa School (medals and Build-It pencil cases); soccer runners-up – Napoli FC (trophies and Build-It sports bags); netball winners – Sidingulwazi Primary (player individual trophies and medals, and R2000 building materials voucher); soccer winners – Peacemakers FC (team trophy, player individual trophies, Build-It sports bags, full soccer kit and R3000 building materials voucher); school with the most supporters – Sidingulwazi Primary (R1000 building materials voucher).
