NEWCASTLE KZN: Ron Howe retains his bowls title

The Northern Zone Senior Singles competition was hosted by Volksrust Bowling Club earlier this month. Playing in ideal weather on very smooth greens, the participants produced some excellent bowls.
The ladies’ sections were won by Essie Slabbert (Dundee) and Kate Osborne (Volksrust), who then did battle in the final. Essie was quick off the mark and took an early lead, which she maintained despite a spirited comeback from Kate, to deservedly annex the title for her maiden victory.
The men’s sections were won by defending champion Ron Howe, Trevor Smale, Fritz Botha, Dennis Bellingan, Tony de Pooter and John Douthwaite (all Newcastle).
In the quarter-final playoffs, Fritz accounted for a very gallant Dennis, who playing in his first zone competition put in an excellent performance to win his section, while Trevor defeated Tony. In the semi-finals, Ron then beat Fritz in a close encounter and Trevor beat John.
The finals then saw Ron pitted against Trevor and a surprisingly one-sided affair saw Ron comfortably retain his title. In the playoff for third place, John edged out Fritz. All in all, it was a good outing for the Newcastle Bowling Club members.
A Youth Day tabs-in competition on June 16 was won by Joan Schoon, Trevor Douthwaite, Ryk Pepler and Heather Hitchen, who together with a number of other members had an enjoyable morning.
