The Northern Zone Singles Championships was hosted by Dundee Bowling Club at the weekend. An entry of 12 women and 24 men was received, with battle commencing on Saturday to determine the section winners.

The ladies’ section winners were Sylvia Malan (Dundee), Urcilla Mulder (Vryheid), Rita Meyer (Dundee), and Alice Howe (Newcastle). In the semi-finals, Sylvia accounted for Urcilla whilst after a titanic battle, Rita edged out Alice.

The final followed a similar pattern to Rita’s semi-final game, with her streaking ahead to take a comfortable lead only to see her determined opponent – Sylvia – fight back to be in contention. Rita then displayed excellent BMT (big match temperament) to draw the winning shot and annex the title.

In the playoff for third and fourth place, Alice beat Urcilla.

The men’s sections were won by Greg Conolly (Dundee), Ian Stoop (Volksrust), Ron Howe (Newcastle), Brendon van Vreden (Piet Retief), Ian de Jager (Dundee), Dougie Slabbert (Dundee), Tony de Pooter (Newcastle) and Des Johnston (Dundee).

Quarter-final matches saw Ian Stoop beat Greg, Ron beat Brendon, Ian de Jager beat Dougie and Des beat Tony. The semi-finals saw Ron edge out Ian Stoop and Des get the better of clubmate, Ian de Jager.

Des then continued with his excellent form to beat a tiring Ron, and in doing so win the West Cup which was presented by the Newcastle Advertiser and has been played for since 1930, only missing the four years during World War II.

In the playoffs for third and fourth place, Ian de Jager beat Ian Stoop.
