NEWCASTLE KZN: A good day of fishing, despite ‘slow bites’

The stand-out 'Angler of the Day' was Brandon Halforty of Ladysmith.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and government’s subsequent restrictions, the Devland Impuphu Wholesalers Natal Fresh Water Angling Association (NFWAA) 2020/2021 season has been amended and unfortunately, some competitions may not take place.

Shabir Ismail, president of the NFWAA confirmed however, that one of the competitions which will see the light of day is the NFWAA Devland Impuphu Wholesalers Knock-Out Competition.

“The semi-finals of this competition took place at Richgate Park at the Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam on February 28,” he commented, saying the ‘old lady’ of the association, the Chelmsford Angling Club was up against Ladysmith in Zones 3 and 4.

“Defending champion, Riverside was drawn against tough opposition in the form of Itec Freespool – their ‘fish-off’ took place in Zones 1 and 2. While the weather conditions seemed favourable for a good day of fishing, the bites were slow,” chuckled Ismail, adding this was reflected in the points tally.

Ladysmith took its winning league form into the knock-out format and overcame Chelmsford by 74 points to 26, in a one-sided contest. More evenly balanced was Itec versus Riverside, the former of which ‘out-fished’ Riverside by 37 points to 21.

Brandon Halforty receives his prize money and trophy from Yeshveer Sewpersad.

“The stand-out ‘Angler of the Day’ was Brandon Halforty of Ladysmith, who amassed an individual haul of 20 points and also caught the heaviest scaled fish of the outing. Itec Freespool’s Gerrit Harmse ultimately reeled in a barbel of 3.309kg and won himself a R250 Devland Impuphu Wholesales voucher and an outright trophy,” confirmed Ismail.

The voucher and trophy for the scaled category was won by Brandon Halforty.

There were also three weighable rare species of fish caught – Suvyn Budhoo and Ranesh Bharat of Chelmsford caught a kurper of 1.170kg and an eel of 0.825kg respectively, while Rachel Boltman of Itec Freespool was lucky enough to land a 500h scaly.

Gerrit Harmse receives his non-scaled category prizes from Vish Govinder.

“The knock-out final is scheduled to take place at the same venue on March 14, with Itec Freespool and Ladysmith set to lock horns,” concluded Ismail.
