NEWCASTLE KZN: Swimming superstar invited to Paralympic trials

Paula van Zyl has been invited to the Paralympic trials in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) in April.

Next month, Paula van Zyl will take one step closer to the Paralympic Games.

The local swimming star has been invited by Swimming South Africa to attend the Paralympic trials, which take place in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in early April.

Paula’s proud mother, Elke explains that swimmers were selected for the trials based on the Swimming South African database, which charts points and rankings with FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation – the organisation which administers international water sport competitions).

“They [Swimming South Africa] would invite the South African swimmers ranked in each Olympic/Paralympic Event to participate,” she adds.

Paula is very excited to be selected for the trials and our best wishes for success go with her.

In 2019, Paula also clinched the title of ‘KwaZulu-Natal Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability’, at the prestigious KZN Sport Awards, beating 11 other nominees in her category.

Be sure to read an upcoming edition of the Newcastle Advertiser for more on Paula and this latest accolade.
