VRYHEID: Excruciatingly hot day for golfers at Hoërskool Pionier’s Golf Day

With lots of laughter and sometimes disappointment, players had to surrender their golf balls in aid of one of the prizes

It was one of the hottest summer days on Saturday when Hoërskool Pionier hosted their annual Golf Day at Vryheid Country Club.
The club was transformed into a burst of colour with an energetic and lively vibe as the music played while a total of 136 players prepared to tee off.
The day prior to the main event, 90 golfers teed off in a fun-filled golfing day. Local golfers and those from neigbouring towns had to fight for a spot in this very prestigious and well organised event.
This is the third year for Pionier to host the Golf Day and this year had its own challenges amid a global pandemic, which caused the organisers some detailed planning and precautionary measures to ensure that all the Covid-19 regulations were in place. And what is a proper Hoërskool Pionier Golf Day without a kink; golfers were challenged in their skills on the last hole when balls were ‘taken’ when they landed in a marked-out section or in an ‘imaginary’ bunker before the green.
With lots of laughter and sometimes disappointment, players had to surrender their golf balls in aid of one of the prizes, which would go to the person/s who spent the longest on the course at the end of the day.
Whether you were a skilled golfer or you constantly had to fight your way out of the rough, the day was enjoyed by each and every one of them.
Teachers, parents, Pionier’s Golf Day Committee and the learners all worked together to make this day yet another highlight on the school’s calendar. In the words of retired teacher and skilled organiser Johanna Botha: “A Golf Day is one of the easiest events to organise as a fund-raiser when you have all your ‘ducks in a row’ prior to the day.”
Results from the competition were as follows:
First – Estiaan, Ettiene, Rupert and Ryno (82)
