NEWCASTLE: Model plane enthusiasts spread their wings at Newcastle Airport

Local model aircraft enthusiasts joined forces with the Rand Model Aircraft Club to hold a flying meet in Newcastle.

From October 15 to 18, model aircraft enthusiasts had the time of their lives at the Newcastle Airport.

Members of Johannesburg’s Rand Model Aircraft Club joined with members of the Newcastle Model Aircraft Club (NMAC) to fly their planes, meet new people, catch up with old friends and enjoy what local member, Trevor Wolfaardt describes as ‘an awesome hobby sport’.

“We have nice planes and a good turnout this year, despite Covid-19. We even have some members from Durban joining us for the flying,” said Trevor.

Trevor said the non-contact sport was a passion anyone could develop professionally or it could just be for the fun of it.

“It does take some skill but as with anything, the more you practice, the better you get at it,” he admitted.

Trevor has invited residents to view some of his flying videos and find out more about the NMAC on its Facebook page.

He also encouraged those interested, to join the Newcastle Model Aircraft Club which gathers to fly on most weekends at the Newcastle Airport, weather permitting.
