VRYHEID: Athletes conquer Zingela Trail Run

The trail consists of single man-made tracks, as well as rocky game paths, complemented by tall standing aloes and acacias

Vryheid Athletic Club (VAC) is always looking for new and innovative events to challenge their athletes.
This past weekend, six athletes competed in the Zingela Trail Run, which is hosted over two days during October. The event was held in the heart of the bush veld, just past Colenso on the banks of the Tugela River in KwaZulu-Natal. The area is home to lots of wild animals, including nyala, giraffe, kudu, blouwildebeest and ostriches. The trail consists of single man-made tracks, as well as rocky game paths, complemented by tall standing aloes and acacias. On the first day, the athletes ran a 21km trail with numerous climbs, which rewarded them with the most amazing views. Some of the tracks followed around the mountains, while others tested the athletes’ abilities to run over the mountain and through a natural forest. On the second day, VAC athletes Sakkie Spannenberg, Barbara Dicks, Ronell Keeve, Marlene Beän, Ingrid Klingenberg and Taryn Benade had to complete 16km. The weather was perfect, with it being a little overcast during both days’ runs.
The team camped out on the banks of the river for the weekend and experienced the most amazing facilities, which included open air showers and fantastic dishes.
This was a challenging trail run and athletes had to push their limits, but it was a perfect weekend with breathtaking views to reward each drop of sweat and muscle ache during and after the run.
