Ladysmith: BA student Nonhlanhla shines on the netball court

'I look up to people like Bongi Msomi and Precious Mthembu, who are both in the South African Netball Squad. They are my biggest inspiration'

Ladysmith KZN –  “I came out of a netball star who performed miracles when she was on the court. Yes, that’s right, my mother’s fire and love for this sport live within me and that is why shooting hoops is second nature for me,” exclaims young netball star Nonhlanhla Mathonsi (23).

Ladysmith Gazette reporter Sindiswa Buthelezi conducted an exclusive interview with the sporting protégé who says this sport is her passion.

“I started playing netball at the very young age of 12. At that stage, I was already competing in trials for provincial netball. Each and every year, I would represent KZN in the provincial games, up until I reached the age of 18.”

Her shining accomplishment as an athletic 18-year-old was when she became part of the Under 18 South African Netball Squad. She was later shortlisted to represent South Africa in Angola.

“I look up to people like Bongi Msomi and Precious Mthembu, who are both in the South African Netball Squad. They are my biggest inspiration,” smiles Nonhlanhla.

She continues that, as of now, she is focused on her tertiary education as a student at the University of the Free State, doing a BA degree in Journalism and Media Studies.

But netball is never far behind on her list of priorities, so you’re sure to see more great achievements on the court by this energetic lady with fire in her soul.
