Vryheid KZN: Athletes ecstatic to receive their goodie bags for virtual Comrades race

Unfortunately, the athletes could not be awarded with medals this year, but they did however receive goodie bags

The Comrades Marathon was cancelled earlier this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) came up with the idea for athletes to still compete in a virtual ‘Race The Comrades Legends’ race and they could select their distances of 5km, 10km, 21km, 45km or 90km. Unfortunately, the athletes could not be awarded with medals this year, but they did however receive goodie bags to commemorate this very unusual participation in this Ultimate Human Race of 2020. Here is what a few of the local runners who participated had to say…

Bongani Msimango: I was very well trained for Comrades, but the whole world had the same disappointment! I am positive and training hard, and I will be well prepared at the starting line of Comrades 2021!
Melissa Scheepers: It’s amazing how the Comrades Marathon Association handled everything after cancelling the race. I am not always into what we receive in the goodie bag and shirt, but this year it really is great to have something to look back on. I have kept on training throughout the lockdown and can’t wait for the next Comrades Marathon.
Richard Scheepers: This goodie bag is just great after Melissa and I ran the full 90km Comrades Legends this year. Even though we didn’t do it in Durban, we still had great support and this shirt is just a bonus. If Comrades takes place in 2021, I will definitely run.
Marlene Beän: Receiving my goodie bag took me back to the registrations of Comrades. Thank you Comrades 2020 for the souvenir goodie bag. Such a special and exciting and nervous moment. I’m so thankful for the Comrades that never happened – it made me realise that running is not just for a race, but a daily activity to stay fit and be healthy. Whatever lies ahead for Comrades 2021 is an unofficial statement – excited to see what happens.
Ntokozo Mbatha: I am a VAC runner. I am so happy to have received my goodie bag for Comrades Marathon 2020, although I am feeling sad that we didn’t run this year, as I was preparing myself to run my fourth Comrades Marathon this year. I hope this situation for a pandemic disease will pass over and everything goes back to normal. I am ready to run the 2021 Comrades Marathon. As soon as entries are open, I will enter. Thank you!
