Senior golfing association, SAGES is utilising a virtual golf experience to replace monthly and annual gatherings.

A press statement issued by the organisation recently, explained that as an alternative to the monthly SAGES competitions held at specific golf courses in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, members instead supported their own clubs with the results centralised and captured by a specialised programme. This served as a trial run for the programme, which was commissioned and presented to the committee during the national lockdown.

“At a pre Covid-19 committee meeting in March, it was mooted the local SAGES branch (Drakensberg) should embark on a course which would involve designing and implementing a unique golfing programme. The recently appointed vice-chairman was tasked with writing the programme, which would encompass a database, membership activity, average score monitoring, a membership representation list and competitions planning and results outcomes,” read the statement.

On August 13, members had the choice to play at their own clubs or any venue they chose. With a significant increase in turnout on the day, golfers utilised the programme and results were available the following day (August 14). Individual winning teams were identified and an overall winning team was then chosen by results.

In lauding the success of the programme, the SAGES Drakensberg committee is extending an invitation to all affiliated golfers older than 50, to join the national organisation and partake in the joys of the game of golf.
