Virtually taking part in the Memel Challenge

One has to entertain oneself on a 25km walk, hence social distance 'selfies' were in order for the day!

When a friend phones on a Saturday morning in lockdown and informs you of a ‘virtual’ walk the following day, you listen and participate!
The Memel Walk is an annual event when more than 2000 athletes take on various distances, of which the highlight is the 52-kilometre walk / run from Memel to Newcastle. Being the historic year it is, it was decided that ‘lockdown will not have the upper hand’! Judy Garland said: “Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.”
Adéle Richter, together with Susan Pitout and Marianka Knox from Newcastle, took part in this year’s virtual run on August 9, which also marks Women’s Day.
They took on a 25-kilometre route in Newcastle. Their assistant for the day was Willem Richter, who was also their ‘packing mule’ on his bicycle. It was a sunny but windy morning and en-route, they met several other participants. One has to entertain oneself on a 25km walk, hence social distance ‘selfies’ were in order for the day!
It was a great opportunity for all the participants to test their mental, physical and emotional strengths. There’s always that last 200m lap you have to do in the front yard to complete the full distance on your tracker!
The walking trio are looking forward to competing in the full event next year, and would like to encourage everyone to participate in this amazing annual event!
