In this week’s edition of the Newcastle Advertiser, Konrad ‘Twinkle Toes’ Erasmus describes his journey from MMA green belt to full-on recovery, following an ‘ironic’ injury he sustained in late 2018.

He has also provided five tips athletes can follow, to stay fighting fit during the lockdown:

  1. Learn by watching – visualisation is half of the training for skills: “If you can see yourself doing it, chances are you can do it.”
  2. Use the time in lockdown for muscle maintenance – Konrad recommends exercises such as myofascial release and stretching.
  3. Use what you have – furniture and structures make a great gym if you know how to use them.
  4. Be careful of over-snacking – Konrad says it is easy during the pandemic to eat snacks out of boredom of because they are available: “Rather have some water. Sometimes thirst is presented by the body as cravings.”
  5. Ensure you get enough sunlight – Konrad explains sunshine is important for the creation of Vitamin D, which strengthens the immune system and also aids the body in absorbing calcium.
