Telling cancer to ‘take a hike’
The hike was initially held to raise funds in support of Jade Preston, who bravely fought cancer but sadly succumbed to her illness
This coming Sunday (June 28) has been earmarked as a day to stand in solidarity with those who are fighting cancer and life-threatening blood diseases.
The Sunflower Fund will be hosting the 13th Annual Jade Sky Memorial Hike, which, for this year and for the first time ever, will be a cyber-based campaign.
The hike was initially held to raise funds in support of Jade Preston, who bravely fought cancer but sadly succumbed to her illness. This commemorative walk aims to celebrate life and remember those who were challenged by cancer, and support those currently battling the disease, says event organiser Mandy Tyrer. The hike is for those who enjoy the outdoors and all hiking enthusiasts, as well as families and individuals of all ages and fitness levels. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 restrictions on social gatherings, this year’s event will take the form of an online challenge. Participants are encouraged to make a much-needed donation of R50 via EFT or bank deposit towards the event and to email a photo of their walk or hike on Sunday. The photos will be posted on the Jade Sky Hike 2020 Facebook Page and will be shared across The Sunflower Fund’s social media pages.
Hikers are encouraged to create a fun, adventurous, exciting and challenging route. The funds raised will be divided between patients and families who are affected by cancer, as well as The Sunflower Fund to create awareness about the need for blood stem donors (as well as to recruit donors).
