Youngster with a passion for ‘going downhill’ during lockdown

Before the lockdown, Deron took part in the DRI Downhill Championship in Johannesburg

Deron Faurie (17) has a love for downhill mountain biking. However, his adrenaline has been put on hold during the current lockdown period, as he is at home and can’t go out on his bike.

This hasn’t stopped Deron from finding an amazing way to fuel his passion in his very own backyard. He has built a series of jumps and obstacles to keep him going on two wheels!

From the driveway, Deron speeds up on his Rocky Mountain downhill bike and makes the jumps look super-easy as he reaches a height of almost two metres into the air.

He also built a berm, which is a tight corner, to help him keep up with his practice.

Before the lockdown, Deron took part in the DRI Downhill Championship, which was held in Johannesburg. All the practice and hard work he put in saw him coming third in his age category.

Deron explains that it all started as a youngster watching downhill biking on TV. After seeing the action on television, he just couldn’t wait to get on two wheels himself.

Deron adds that he was inspired by the McMaster brothers, who are involved in downhill biking, and wanted to join them.

He loves doing big jumps at high speed and also tricks like double back flips.

He laughs as he affirms that he will never stop his biking, as it’s a thrill and he just loves it.
