Pandemic leaves Bongani in the starting blocks

Bongani also dreamed of finishing in the top ten of a major race this year

From training on tar roads to jogging in one’s backyard, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected athletes greatly.

One of Endumeni’s star runners, Bongani Sabela, has seen many of his dreams for this year dashed by the pandemic. Bongani last ran in March when he completed a 42km marathon in Durban in a time of two hours and 50 minutes.

His last proper training was on March 25 and since then, he’s been forced to exercise at home or jog in the yard. This has been extremely difficult for Bongani, who loves being out on the road, training hard to better his times. This year, he aimed to beat his previous best time in the Comrades Marathon by at least 30 minutes.

He also dreamed of being in the top 10 of a major race. While understandably disappointed to be missing out, Bongani also understands the need for the lockdown and encourages others to follow the rules thereof.

“Try and keep fit, but respect the regulations for your own safety. We must treat these lockdown rules with the same respect we treat all races. Stick to the rules and we are guaranteed come out on top when this is all over.”
