Novice runner is a ‘Friend’ indeed

Richard's route was approximately 290m, which he had to run 146 times.

During this hard time in our country, Richard Friend decided to do something out of the ordinary and raise a bit of money for those who need it more than he does.
He decided to attempt to complete ‘the ultramarathon backyard challenge’, which was Richard’s first marathon ever and involved completing a 42,3 kilometre run all in the confined space of his backyard. The rules entailed that the route may not exceed 300m and must be completed in one go.
Richard’s route was approximately 290m, which he had to run 146 times.
“This run was a lot tougher than expected, as there were many different surfaces and turns,” explained Richard. “My knees and joints took a lot of strain, however the pain was worth the cause and challenge.”
He attempted this run because he wanted to raise funds for a feeding scheme run by ‘Joy to the Nations’ church in Port Elizabeth, where his uncle, Brendan Lock is the pastor.
This church has taken it upon itself to create food parcels and deliver them to some of the poorest townships in the area.
These food parcels contain essential items for these people to keep their stomachs full and prevent malnutrition.
“Our country has high levels of poverty, with millions of people starving each day, and I wanted to do something for someone. Many are unable to work during this lockdown, not being paid, which results in them to not being able to support and feed their families. This feeding scheme will help in the combatting of this crisis. During this time, we have been given the opportunity to count our blessings and realise how fortunate we really are, and I urge you to be selfless and help others where you can. Let’s work together to help combat the effects of this virus.”
