Dominant Itec Freespool defends its angling title

It was a season of big catches and near misses for the anglers of the NFWAA.

The Natal Fresh Water Angling Association’s (NFWAA) Devland Imphupu League 5 fished off on March 15 at Richgate Park, Chelmsford Dam. The event was curtains down for the association, bringing the 2019/2020 season to an end.

Anglers queued at the gate from as early as 11am on the Saturday to claim the best spots – including ‘dry trees’, ‘launch pad’ and ‘tail end’. These lucky spots proved to be the decider once again, as anglers there secured the vital points for their clubs.

Fishing on the day was very slow. Anglers joked that the fish had heard the call from President, Cyril Ramaphosa and immediately went into lockdown. At the weigh-in, the few nets were proof enough that anglers had a tough day.

The heaviest barbel is reeled in by Lalla Bikramjith.

Defending champion, Itec Freespool dominated again by securing 51 points to its closest competitor Riverside (39), leaving Chelmsford in third (24). The club was followed by Endumeni (22) and Docrats once again settled for last spot (15). Freespool topped the overall log with 50 points to retain its title, with Endumeni finishing second on 32, followed by Chelmsford on 28, Riverside on 26 and Docrats, which struggled the whole season, on 18.

The day’s heaviest carp was caught by Avinash Singh of Chelmsford, which tipped the scale at 3,48 kilograms, while the heaviest barbel was bagged by Lalla Bikramjith of Freespool (3,72kg).

The Angler of the Season prize was captured by Cassim Abdool of Freespool with 48 points, ahead of Shabeer Pullen of Endumeni on 43 points and Lalla Bikramjith of Freespool on 41 points. The Junior Angler of the Season was Stuart Talanda of Riverside, with 19 points. The Senior Angler of the Season title was claimed by Pravesh Gopie of Endumeni, while the Female Angler of the Season was Debbie Robson of Freespool.

All anglers will receive their accolades at the NFWAA awards, which will be the first event on the calendar of the new season. The association’s open competition scheduled for April 5, has been postponed to the new season.

The NFWAA thanked all sponsors and anglers for a successful season, and looked forward for an even better season to come.
