Highlanders rugby trials aim to unearth new talent

Swanepoel reported that players were eager to participate, and had started training from as early as January 10. 

Ahead of a busy season, complete with national club competition, Newcastle Highlanders hosted trials at the Arbor Park Grounds on Friday night.

Head Coach, Andre Swanepoel said: “Chukkas [a shorter format of play] of 20 minutes each were played, with 55 players attending the trials in pouring rain.”

Swanepoel reported that players were eager to participate, and had started training from as early as January 10.

“Approximately 22 players have joined the club. An exciting season lies ahead. Highlanders I will have an opportunity to play in the Gold Cup this year, which is the national club championship,” he continued.

Highlanders will go up against Barberton at a premier game on March 28 at the Mbombela Stadium.

The fixtures for the season are as follows:

March 14 – Newcastle Highlanders versus Volksrust (away).
March 21 – Newcastle Highlanders versus Winterton (away).
March 28 – Newcastle Highlanders: first team – Gold Cup; second and third teams – Volksrust.

“The Highlanders Rugby Club is in the process of doing alterations to make the facility more attractive for supporters, including a deck with a bar, an upgraded women’s toilet and a tuck shop. We are looking forward to the 2020 season,” concluded Swanepoel.
