Shock for Freespool as Riverside delivers the angling knockout

Both teams were on tenterhooks as the scale master made the announcement of the new champion.

Defending champion, Itec Freespool was determined to retain the title it has held for the past two seasons, at the Devland Imphupu Knockout finals. The competition is hosted by the Natal Fresh Water Angling Association (NFWAA).

Freespool’s opponents, Riverside AC ultimately denied the defending champions the glory of claiming the title three seasons in a row this past weekend, at Sandford Zones A and B. At the weigh-in, both teams were on tenterhooks as the scale master made the announcement of the new champion – Riverside.

However, just eight points separated the clubs, with Riverside on 51 and Freespool on 43.

Anglers place their landing nets in the water and get ready for the big bites.

The heaviest carp of the day was caught by Daniel from Riverside AC, weighing 3,370 kilograms. The heaviest barbel was reeled in by Vernen Naicker, also from Riverside, with a weight of 3,465kg. Riverside’s Jermaine bagged the heaviest eel, weighing 0,890kg.

The rare species caught on the day was a kurper with a weight of 0,945kg, by Debbie Robson of Itec Freespool.

The final league will take place March 15 at Richgate Park, Chelmsford Dam, with anticipated surprises on the cards for the mighty Freespoolers.
