Walter and Marelie claim squash champion titles

The Squash Club also thanks every player who took part and everyone who came to support the players on the court.

On Saturday, Dundee Squash Club hosted the 2019 Squash Championships finals, where many exciting games were played.

The club thanked George and Jane Adalis from Charlie’s Superspar for sponsoring the evening and the great prizes, and said without their generous support, the game of squash would deteriorate in the town. Players and supporters enjoyed an afternoon at the squash courts, watching excellent games and good competitive fun.

The first game of the day was between Klaas de Jager and Jan Deysel for the C Division trophy. Klaas, who is a very new and avid member of the club, was victorious in the end.

Eugene Corbitt won the B Division trophy against Craig Owen, while Andre Karsten beat Kevern Mattison for the plate and third place went to Kevin Donaldson.

The women’s games were equally intense, starting with the play-off for third and fourth place between Natasha du Plessis and Nicolette van Rensburg. Natasha was leading 2 – 0 with one more game to win, when Nicolette suddenly got a second wind, equalising the game at 2-all. Natasha was then 8 – 2 behind and had to work very hard to win the last game.

Walter du Plessis receives his prize as Dundee Squash Champ for 2019 from Stavros Kunene (representing Charlies Superspar) while a very proud Helen van Emmerik looks on.

This five-setter was a great pre-match for the exciting men’s final between Sifiso Kunene and Walter du Plessis, which was certainly a nail-biter.

Walter won the first game 16 – 14 but Sifiso would not give up easily, winning the second game 15 – 13. Both Walter and Sifiso were extremely tired by the third game and had to dig deep with every shot. The crowd was treated to some excellent shots and exciting rallies from both players. In the end, Walter won the next two games 15 – 13 and 17 – 15.

“Well done to Walter du Plessis for winning the match and being crowned Dundee Squash Champ for 2019.”

The ladies’ final was between Nozipho Hadebe and Marelie Kelbrick. This was another very exciting match to watch, with every game ending in a very tight score. Marelie Kelbrick ultimately won the match 3 – 0, resulting in her being crowned Ladies’ Squash Champ for 2019.

“Thanks to Kevern Mattison for scoring many games on the day. The Squash Club also thanks every player who took part in the championship and everyone who came to support the players on the court. It was truly a wonderful afternoon of squash. Thanks to the proactive committee who, with the continuous support of Charlie’s Superspar, organised a memorable league.”
