APL angling action brings major upsets

According to officials, it was a day of 'upsets and shocks' as major contenders failed to secure the top four spots.

Competition within the ranks of the Angling Professional League (APL) has become intense.

The determination of the affiliates as each round of the competition progresses, with the huge turnout of anglers evident. The first round of the Transnat KO Eliminator was held at Sandford on November 3.

According to officials, it was a day of ‘upsets and shocks’ as Breakwaters and Stillwaters crashed out of the competition, failing to secure the top four spots.

“It was history in the making as Breakwaters, for the first time since 1991, was eliminated in the first round of the Knock Out Competition. Credit should be given to both Glencoe and Dannhauser Angling Clubs for their efforts and for being fiercely competitive on the day,” said Matthew Shunmugam.

Results:

Ladysmith AC tops the log with 137 points
Dannhauser AC (75 pts)
Challengers (59 pts)
Glencoe AC (50 pts)
Breakwaters AC (44 pts), and
Stillwaters (31 pts).

The semi-finals will be contested between Ladysmith AC and Glencoe, while Dannhauser and Challengers will square off against each other at Richgate Park.

“It was an unfortunate day for renowned angler, Ronnie Rampersadh, who landed his barbel of 8,2 kilograms after playing the fish for more than an hour on his carp trace. However, the weigh-in had closed by that time.”

The ‘Angler of the Day’ was Shane Mangaroo of Ladysmith AC, who finished with 22 points, a single point ahead of Rajendra Garahoo of Challengers. Shane Mangaroo is the holder of the blue and green caps, and as the overall leader, also received R200 and an outright trophy.

“This season, the prizes have been made rather lucrative with the top three anglers winning themselves R3 000, R2 000 and R1 000 worth of angling tackle respectively with the compliments of the APL and Mohamed Midas. The ‘Angler of the Year’ will receive a tackle voucher worth R3 000 and family weekend getaway.”

The previous competition of the APL was the VME League 4 at Richgate Park on November 17. Challengers AC will be hosting an overnight bank angling open competition on November 30 at Sandford.
