Pilots take model aircraft to new heights

With the weather playing its part, pilots from Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria showed off their aerobatic skills in miniature.

It was not a bird nor Superman, but something was up in the Newcastle sky this week.

Model aircraft took to the sky during a three-day fly-in at the Newcastle Airport from October 17 to 19.

The Newcastle Model Aircraft Club (NMAC) hosted Rand Model Aircraft Club, with pilots flying their nitro, petrol and battery powered planes at the Newcastle Airport.

NMAC chairperson, Trevor Wolfaardt explained the concept of the fly-in was based on social interaction, where model aircraft pilots met to share ideas and assist each other.

“We encourage more members to join the club and interact, and learn more about flying model aircraft,” he said.

With the weather playing its part, pilots from Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria showed off their aerobatic skills in miniature.

NMAC gathers every Saturday and Sunday at the Newcastle Airport to practice flying model aircraft, weather permitting.
