League aims to hone the next generation of Protea cricketers

Young cricketers excited about the new League in Vryheid.

Excitement filled the air, as children of all ages gathered on Saturday (October 12) for the first ever U-13 Cricket League, held at Cecil Emmett Sport Grounds.
The Zululand Cricket Union, in collaboration with the Vryheid Cricket Club, established the league which falls under the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) umbrella.
CEO of KZNCU, Heinrich Strydom is the league’s sponsor.
“It was initially planned for every second Saturday. However, it was such a great turnout that we will host it every Saturday for now,” said organiser, Gavin Minott.
The league is intended to provide young cricket players more matches and game time between September and April.
On Saturday, all players had the opportunity to bat and bowl in a friendly match.
Minott praised the children who took part and made special mention of those who excelled on the field: Leon le Roux (who took three wickets in one over) and Neliswe Mtshali were crowned the best bowlers, while Shane van der Linde, Tristan Hambrook and Abdulla Ashfaq were among the top batsmen, each retiring at 20.
Bruce Tembo is the enthusiastic coach for the league.
He is permanently employed by Michaelis Private School, but also runs his own cricket clinic from its premises.
The U-13 Cricket League will take place every Saturday at 9am at Cecil Emmett Sport Grounds.
