Drawn to the world of cricket from a tender age

Success is what spurs Shahid Muhammad on, whether bowling, batting or fielding

Being at the helm of a winning team requires inner and inter-personal discipline. Shahid Muhammad has mastered this balance and has been leading from the front since taking over the captainship for a local cricket team more than 8 years.

The 38-year-old father of two says that cricket is like second nature to him and he wants to instill the enjoyment of the game in not only his club members but also all players.

United Cricket Club Shahid Muhammed with his sons Huzaifa (7) and Talhah (8).

Born in Pakistan where he was drawn to the world of cricket from the age of 7, he naturally picked up the game when he moved to Estcourt in 2003.

“I asked around and found out that there was a league, so I approached a local team and they gave me a chance. I started playing with Aster, then FoodZone and now I am the captain of United Cricket Club (formerly known as Farhaan Aluminium),” explained Mr Muhammad.

His forte is spin bowling, although he also relishes batting and fielding.

“The most important thing about spin bowling is to focus on your line and length. I advise young bowlers to improve themselves with each ball, try something new. You have a fresh start with every ball,” he added.

Being modest about the accolades he has raked up along the years, Mr Muhammed says he does have several trophies, many of them for Best Bowler, Man of the Series and Man of the Match.

One achievement he is particularly proud of is his team winning the Umtshezi Cricket Association league for two consecutive years.

“I am always positive and work hard on my game. I enjoy every game,” he substantiates.

When Mr Muhammed is not playing or watching cricket, he enjoys badminton.
