Gladiators shape the future of local cricket

"Thanks to all the Gladiators who helped. I seriously appreciate it. We have definitely made an impact on all those children's lives. I cannot thank you all enough." - Gary High.

Established local cricketers from Vryheid Cricket Club’s Gladiators squad spent their Saturday afternoon educating the future of the sport.

In a session at the NRS Sports Grounds, and for a love of the game, the cricketers inspired the upcoming stars of Risen Son Academy’s u-11 and u-13 teams.

Gladiators spent the afternoon cultivating the talent of these two young teams, whose players share a passion for the sport. This passion brought them together on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

“This day was awesome,” wrote Graham Haywood from VCC’s Gladiators. “To everyone who gave up their time today, thank you so much. I think we helped a couple of kids today. It was very humbling just to hear their stories and spend that time with them. I’m in on the next one.”

Gary High, who played a pivotal role in orchestrating the event, added: “Thanks to all the Gladiators who helped. I seriously appreciate it. We have definitely made an impact on all those children’s lives. I cannot thank you all enough.”

He further thanked NRS for the use of its grounds.

Given the response from the Risen Son Academy cricketers, neither Haywood nor High were off the mark.

Henrietta Barry, Principal of Risen Son, said, “To Gary and all the amazing men [and women] who coached and played cricket with my students from Risen Son, thank you from my heart. I cannot tell you what the day meant to the boys. They could not stop talking about it. ‘Ma’am, this was the best day ever’ was a goodbye I had from one of the boys.”

The young cricketers and Risen Son staff extended their thanks to Gary High, Freddy and Joshua Stoltenkamp, Andrea Sander, Phillip Venter, Wessel Vorster, Cameron Boock, Bonginkosi Mkhonza, Sicelo ‘Sonic’ Khuzwayo and Graham Haywood, for their time and valuable input.

The school looks forward to future collaboration with such inspiring community members.
