Golf Club to reconsider housing estate option

The benefits to Council would be the rates and taxes of around 65 upper market properties...

Dundee Golf Club hosted its annual general meeting last Wednesday and club captain, Dave Donaldson gave an overview of the club – one of only two 18-hole courses in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The club was originally positioned approximately behind where the Pro Nobis School is presently situated. Its golf course was built in early 1900, with the actual old clubhouse behind the tennis courts, while the present clubhouse was built in around 1953.
It is apparently the fourth oldest golf club in the country.

The club building and surrounding land belongs to the club, but the golf course proper is the property of the Endumeni Municipality and is in use on a 90-year lease.

The oldest member of the club is Ernest Ngidi, and also the first pro in NKZN. Although, I must add that because of the apartheid system, Mr Ngidi could only participate on the system designed for blacks only and as far as I know, he is still in possession of his pro card for that time.

We are again honoured with a South African pro in our circle, none other than our president’s son, the young Louis Alberts. We have had some amazing golfers in this club over time and our Honour board speaks for itself, as do the new initiatives we have in mind to increase rounds of golf at our club:

  1. Redesigning of the club’s website, to assist us in marketing our club to visitors abroad as well as within SA boundaries.
  2. To approach the Mayor and Municipal Manager of uMzinyathi District Municipality, with the intention to get them on board with our future golf development initiatives.
  3. To pursue the offer from the Northern Natal Golf Union, to claim back R50 for each adult golf member.
  4. To formulate an ad hoc committee consisting of members and also outside knowledgeable members, to formulate a document to the Endumeni Council in which we motivate and request the council to seriously consider handing over the golf course land to the Dundee Golf Club committee.

“Furthermore, we hope to mobilise business and residents to support our request. The benefits in this would be we then may embark on approaching developers to consider a golf estate. The benefits to Council would be the rates and taxes of around 65 upper market properties and the same for the golf club in levies for the same properties, which will secure the future of the club for many years to come. This is not forgetting the 65 families who will support the club and hopefully an up-market restaurant. We will keep you informed on developments in this regard.”
