Newcastle bowlers have been kept busy over the past few weeks, in both local competitions and while supporting other clubs in the district.

The club Men’s and Ladies’ Trips competitions were won by Ron Howe, Ernie Phillips and Adrian van der Merwe, and Joan Schoon, Vicky van der Merwe and Edith Pretorius respectively.

The runner-up in the men’s competition was the team of Koen Pretorius, Solly Cronje and Marius Bouwer Snr, and in the ladies’ competition, Alice Howe, Denise Phillips and Martie Pepler.

Stephen and Samantha Shaw continued their good form this year, and together with Des Johnson (Dunee) and Jaco van Zyl (Richards Bay) annexed the title, after a closely-fought battle in their last game.

Newcastle Bowling Club hosted its AGM last Saturday afternoon.

Outgoing president, Koen Pretorius thanked sponsors for their continued support, mentioning them all by name.
He also congratulated all members who had done well in club and district competitions, making special mention of Vicky van der Merwe – for winning a gold medal at the SA Disabled Bowls Tournament, and Stephen Shaw – for winning the District Masters competition.

Pretorius also stated the Business League continued to be extremely popular with the community, and was an event the club needed to maintain.

He thanked his committee for its sterling work during the year, as well as making mention of non-committee members who continued to ‘do their bit’ for the club.

Finally, he wished the incoming committee all the best for the year ahead.
