Cycle enthusiasts take on the mountain challenge

Drakensberg Primary School teacher and race organiser, Hannelie van der Walt said their aim was to encourage an active lifestyle.

Cycling enthusiasts braved the chilly winter weather on Saturday, June 1, and participated in Drakensberg Primary School’s 2019 Ukhahlamba Mountain Bike Event, held at the Grey Goose Game Lodge.

It was a challenging experience for some participants as they cycled the 5km, 10km, 20km or 40km courses in the area around the Ukhahlamba Mountain. The youngest participant in the 40km race for men was 14-year-old Milan Cilliers, who said he had a good but daunting experience.

“The ride was very technical and challenging, and a beautiful course at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I cycle often and enter competitions now and then and I am definitely looking forward to the next one.”

Drakensberg Primary School teacher and race organiser, Hannelie van der Walt said their aim was to encourage an active lifestyle.

“The main purpose of the event was to encourage and promote living a healthy lifestyle among the Newcastle community. We also wanted to give people a fun and healthy chance of closing off the end of term.

“Our youngest rider was 3-years-old, and it was just a fun day for families to get out of the house, as we all know the winter weather keeps everyone indoors. Parents and children enjoyed the challenge,” she concluded.
