Adventurous cyclists undaunted by harsh Karoo terrain

Vryheid cyclists also excelled during the 50km Memel Race on Saturday, with many taking podium finishes, including Ernest Franzen, who was second overall and just one second behind the leader. New rider, Vlam de Beer finished in fourth place.

Trek2Teebus is a three-day mountain bike adventure, pitting riders against the elements in the Karoo.

The beautiful scenery of the area is in stark contrast to the three stages of hardcore mountain biking, across gruelling distances of 72 kilometres, 55km and 85km respectively.

Four Vryheid cyclists competed in this tough race.

Willem Richter (who finished second overall), Pieter Muller, Marius van Eden and Eugene Bosch completed and enjoyed the challenge, calling it a must-do event that is quite out of the ordinary.

“An exceptional, personalised, attention-to-detail event, with superb Karoo hospitality.”

Congratulations to Marius, who won a prize of Karoo gin for showing the most spirit – die Grootste Bek award.

Wynand Clack finished first in the Memel 30km race, and was second in the 25km Mtunzini race.

The ‘rest’ of the A team finished in the Top 10, while San Haywood was the first female finisher despite some tough competition.

“We are so proud of our young cyclists: Wynand Clack finished first in the 30km and then took part in the Mtunzini 25km race on Sunday, finishing first in the Youth Men category and third overall. Congrats to Jabu Xulu, who also completed the Mtunzini 50km and Arno Stokes, who came third overall and was the first Junior in the Wittenberg 50km on Saturday. A good racing weekend by all.”
