Estcourt’s William Gilbert receives prestigious Fly Fishing award

William was awarded the esteemed Willem Pretorius Trophy for Fly Fishing Excellence

Estcourt lad William Gilbert captained and competed in the South African Fly Fishing Championships at Du Toit Kloof, during the school holidays.

The KZN A team finished in second place at this year’s nationals. William finished in seventh place overall. The competition was held over three-days fishing: one boat session, two dam sessions from the bank and two river sessions.

William was awarded the esteemed Willem Pretorius Trophy for Fly Fishing Excellence. This is a very special award for an angler who has proven himself an ambassador to the sport at the highest level through participation and conduct.

The KwaZulu-Natal Fly Fishing Association (KZNFFA) is super proud to have his name engraved on this trophy.  There also had an international competition against Czech Republic and the other provincial teams.

KZN managed to finish in third place Next year’s World Championships is in the Czech Republic, William will need to attend the Protea trials and qualify again to go to the World Champs.

The young man secured another accolade. On Friday, the South African ranks were announced and William is now ranked first in the country.  Well done!
