Fairy tale win on the golf course

great amount has been said and written before about Selo, who left an indelible mark not only at the club but also our town.

Once upon a time, there lived a large, lovable, happy, green ogre in a faraway swamp on the golf course.

He lived alone and was very happy until the lord of the club banished all the fairy tale characters from the kingdom.

With nowhere to go, they invaded the swamp.

This land grab and the disturbance of his peace made the ogre very angry, so much so that he marched off to the castle to speak to the man in charge.

What the ogre did not know was that the day before was the AGM of the kingdom and a new lord (Roy Gibbons) had been elected, but not before the ousted lord (Pier Turconi) had bestowed the honour of Villager of the Year upon Gavin Livingston and the Stirrer of the Village award to Patrick Pieterse.

Upon his arrival, the ogre was met by a mob of villagers in a joyful mood while they “whined” and dined in the courtyard, waiting for the newly-elected lord to address them.

The lord announced that all members were welcome to stay in the kingdom and that as a token of his appreciation, two lucky subjects would receive a cash bonus.

The first subject to claim the bonus was the gingerbread man Neal Singh, while the adorable and “too much of lovely donkey” Leon Petersen was the second.

Saturday was the Selo Pillay Memorial golf day, held annually in memory of a true club man who loved the camaraderie of club life and golf.

A great amount has been said and written before about Selo, who left an indelible mark not only at the club but also our town.

It is very difficult to write or say much more, but it speaks volumes about the man that when the older members discuss the club, his name always seems to come up with the likes of JO, Cas, George and other stalwarts of the club.

The two knights, who go by the name of Willie Erasmus and Dolf Pollard, rode majestically all over the realm, taking on all comers from far and wide who had arrived to impress the princess.

On their golden steeds, they jousted against the finest to meet the two dark knights, Patrick Mbatha and Jabulani Tshanini, in the final.

Showing some immaculate horsemanship and balance, they knocked out the favourites, Patrick and Jabulani, on a count-out to ensure a fairy tale end to win the tournament.

Two other personalities who prefer the night life to the life of a knight, Rory Sanders and Smanga Shezi, ended up in third spot.

There were four winners of the wrestling for the two-club money and they were Gerald Boardman, Rajen Harilal, Danelo Ceronio and Jabulani.

The winners of the archery contest (getting closest to the target or pin with one arrow) were Themba Ntuli on the 3rd, Segi Pillay the 8th, Gerald Boardman the 11th, Bransby Niemach the 12th and Phillip Boardman the 18th.

Thanks to Max Pillay and his family for organising another outstanding day in memory of his father, Selo. Max’s attention to detail is amazing, right from the commemorative welcome pack, to the new Selo Pillay flags and pins, to the superb halfway and wonderful chicken breyani for supper.

Well done, Max, and a huge thanks from the committee and golfers for the day.
