The event began in 1994 when a group of matric boys went camping.

“I remember we started the walk with a small group of friends. We were lucky enough to get James Small on board in those days and we managed to raise a few Rand for the community. Today we are very proud of how far we’ve come,” recalled co-organiser, Johan Pieters.

In the past, the Memel to Newcastle Event has grabbed the attention of celebrities including David Vlok, Bruce Fordyce and Henry Honiball.
