SPORTS NEWS: Bowling men play for all the marbles
In a very tight game with both players trading shots, Stephen Shaw led 20-19 and lying game, only to see his opponent, Marius Bouwer Snr, trail the jack with his last bowl to score the two shots he needed to move into the final.
The Newcastle Bowling Club Men’s Singles Championship was completed last weekend, with the playoffs of the semi-finals and finals.
In a very tight game with both players trading shots, Stephen Shaw led 20-19 and lying game, only to see his opponent, Marius Bouwer Snr, trail the jack with his last bowl to score the two shots he needed to move into the final.

Ron Howe meanwhile got the better of his gallant opponent, Tony de Pooter, to once again see himself in the final of this championship.
Ron’s experience in these situations was evident in the final, which saw him put an end to Marius’s excellent run and in doing so, become the 2018 Singles Champion.
This weekend, Klipbank Bowling Club in Ladysmith will host the annual inter-zone competition, which will see the Midlands, Northerns and Zululand zones doing battle.
Each zone will be represented by four teams and will play each other to determine the zonal champion.

The Zululand and Northerns zones will be doing the utmost to prevent the 2017 winner of the women’s, men’s and overall titles, Midlands, from defending its titles.
This will no doubt see some excellent bowls being played.
