Ref’s time keeping punishes Sentraal

Tyron Terry also kicked a conversion and Gert completed the scoreline with a late penalty.

Sentraal Rugby’s first team played against Ladysmith Bulldogs on Saturday in Dundee and, from the start, it was clear both teams were not prepared to give an inch.

Newcastle Highlanders win first Shosholoza Cup as Sentraal rugby …

Hard luck for Sentraal as they go down to Piet Retief
For Sentraal, tries were scored by Pierre Booysen, Kevin Ntanzi (2) and Gert Cronje with Pierre converting one try and a penalty. Tyron Terry also kicked a conversion and Gert completed the scoreline with a late penalty. The club welcomed back Johann Bacher who had an outstanding game.

Sadly, Sentraal were again on the receiving end from a referee decision. With the time up on the clock and Sentraal trailing 27 – 26, a penalty was awarded on the halfway line.

The referee said that the time is up and that Sentraal may kick to touch but there is no time for the line-out so they decided to kick at the post, slotting the penalty to lead 29 – 27.

To everyone’s surprise, the referee let the game continue for at least five more minutes to let the Bulldogs slip-in with an unconverted try to take the honours 34 – 29. A disappointing end to a great game.

This coming Saturday Sentraal take on the Mighty Buffalo’s from Newcastle in Newcastle with both first and second teams. Players are urged to be at the practices on Tuesday and Thursday at Dundee High School at 5.30pm.
