The 2018 school rugby season kicked off this weekend with the annual Sarel Cilliers Rugby Day in Glencoe. The hosts supposed to play against HTS Carel de Wet from Vanderbijlpark in the main match of the day, but due to their withdrawal from the day the match was rescheduled to be against Springs Boys High.
That too fell through when the school could not get permission from their education department to travel. Organiser, Dave van der Westhuizen, is known as something of a MacGyver and quickly organised a juggle of the programme which saw Sarel pitted against Greytown High.
Sarel won 43/3 with man of the match, Sifiso Gumede.
Dundee High had another commanding performance, winning 29/3 against Ixopo. The match of the festival was the Pionier vs Welkom Gim game – a ding-dong affair with the Free Staters snatching a 24-20 victory.
Ferrum had a great result against the powerful Voortrekker side of Pietermaritzburg, winning 24-5.
It was a great advert for school rugby and a credit to the Sarel Cilliers staff for organising such a professionally prepared tournament – the 46th time the school has hosted this Rugby Day.
The Lions Den Clubhouse has been upgraded and is the ideal venue for such an event!
There was a moment of silence for former Springbok and Rugby Day Legend, Darius Botha, who died this week and for a former Sarel Cilliers first team player, Ernst Kruger, who passed on.
