Just 2 points needed from the last round to book a place in the finals

With 5 teams looking to get to the finals, the bottom feeders will have a huge say as to who it is

The Rough Riders, whose captain has been on walkabout of late, managed to secure six vital points and need just two points from the last round to ensure that they book their place for the finals in November.

The team spokesman said that the captain’s influence was not missed and that he could possibly qualify as a country member or perhaps he should be signed on as a visitor, as he has been away so often. It was also suggested that perhaps he and his replacement should play a qualifier to see who plays the last round.

I really don’t want to stir up a hornet’s nest with a bullet, but it must be remembered that the Rough Riders are a democratically elected team, with all decisions made only by the captain and that his decisions will be final.

The big movers of the day were Neal’s Tyres, who struggled against an out-of-sorts Bullets team to secure six points and put them back in the running for a place in the finals with 35 points. They take on Team Golf (37 points) next month, which, without doubt, will be the match to watch.

The two front-runners in the Scorpions and Clover Leaf Titans, both on 38 points, are drawn to play the sponsors and the Bullets, and will be looking to take maximum points.

The 4 Must Get Beers (35 points) let it slip over the weekend, but are still in the mix and they play the Cobras. So, with five teams looking to get to the finals, the bottom feeders will have a huge say as to who it is. The Hawks will be watching the outcome of these matches like, well, hawks to ensure there is no collusion, bribery or match fixing.

TEAM PROFILE: THE SCORPIONS

The Scorpions have been around for many a year and were considered to be the team to beat in the 90s, but times change, as does the makeup and fabric of teams.

They have seen numerous changes to their lineup – with players being transferred, retired or put out to pasture – but the last few years has seen the core of the team remain stable.

Their rebuilding programme has been very successful, as seen last year when they finished third just outside the play-off and this year they have been strong contenders right through the championship. Dries Slabbert – is known as Mr Consistent and his (sales) pitch is as sweet as ever.

Gerry Grobler – is the man his teammates turn to when their game crashes or needs a tune-up.

Brian Cuninghame – is the team’s cornerstone when he is not riding off into the sunset.

Corné Stevens – Captain “Rubber Man” keeps the team’s confidence inflated and can get his players to bounce back when they are down.
