Carlos Giammello is a rising wrestling star

Carlos enjoys the practice sessions and being able to compete, but what he looked forward to the most was spending time with his brother and making new friends.

On the mat or in the ring, Carlos Giammello is a wrestling prodigy.

“I like being able to wrestle my friends and take part in competitions,” said Carlos.

The eight-year-old began wrestling eight months ago, when his aunt heard about the Newcastle Cougars.

“His aunt brought him and after his first practice session, Carlos was hooked,” said proud father, Salvador.

While Carlos enjoys the practice sessions and being able to compete. he most of all favoured spending time with his brother and making new friends.

Socialising aside, Salvador said he had seen a definite change within his son.

“Wrestling is good for children, because it helps with focus and discipline.”

As a result, the sport has also taught Carlos teamwork and how to forge good sporting abilities.

“If one of the wrestlers struggle with a certain move, the whole group works together and tries to help that one wrestler,” Salvador continued.

Carlos took part in the KwaZulu-Natal Greco-Roman Wrestling Tournament on June 10, where he joined the ranks of the Newcastle Cougars to compete against wrestlers from Dundee and Richards Bay.

The purpose of the tournament was for competitors to build up points to compete in the South African Championships.

Although still an amateur, a determined Carlos wishes to leave his mark on the wrestling world.

If all goes according to his plans, he will compete in the South African Championships this year.

“My goal is to become a Springbok wrestler!” he exclaimed.
