Local lads selected for SA Rural XI

The proverbial collapse started and Bhekuzulu were all dismissed for 160, an agonising 6 runs short of the target.

THE Kingsmead Mynahs 30 over league match, played on Saturday between King Superstars and Bhekuzulu at Cecil Emmett, was an absolute humdinger.

King Superstars batted first and were all dismissed in the 27th over for 166 runs with Adnan Ilyas (49) and Maser Ahmed (30) top scoring for them. Bhekuzulu’s most successful bowlers were Bonginkosi Mkhonza (6-0-26-2) and Mxolise Ntshangase (6-0-49-2).

With bat in hand, Bhekuzulu were cruising to victory, with Freedom Buthelezi (69) and Thabo Masondo (27) looking very comfortable at the crease being 134/2. Then the proverbial collapse started and Bhekuzulu were all dismissed for 160, an agonising 6 runs short of the target. Tosif Patel (5-0-29-2) and Munawar Mirza (6-0-30-2) returned the best bowling figures for King Superstars.

The first Kennedy Cup semi-final was played at Cecil Emmett on Sunday between Mr X and Wicket Wasps in difficult batting conditions. Mr X batted first and managed 177/10 in the 35th over, with Jean Botha (67) and Adam Slater (44) top scoring. Ruan Senekal bowled well for Wicket Wasps and claimed 5 wickets for 36 runs in his allotted 10 overs.

The Mr X bowlers bowled well, in particular Miguel Machado, also claiming 5 wickets for 31 runs in his spell of 9 overs, restricted Wicket Wasps to 116 all out, with only Andrew Brooks (24) and Juan Booyens (23) showing any sort of resistance. Mr X won by 61 runs.

This Sunday will see King Superstars travel to Dumbe to contest the second Kennedy Cup 50 over semi final as well as Gladiators taking on Bhekuzulu for the 5th place playoff at Cecil Emmett.

Vryheid Cricket Club would like to congratulate local lads, Freedom Buthelezi and Duvan Grobbelaar, who attended South African Rural Week in Cape Town between February 16 and 21, with Duvan Grobbelaar claiming the batsman of the tournament prize. Both Freedom and Duvan have been selected for the South African Rural XI and will be playing various games in April and touring Namibia in August. Well done, chaps!
