SPORT: Futsol season comes to an end

The court was action packed as teams went all out for the prestigious trophies and prizes up for grabs.

The Newcastle Futsol League (NFL), wrapped up the 2016 Futsol season on Sunday.

The court was action packed as teams went all out for the prestigious trophies and prizes up for grabs.

Wimbledon went in as favourites to win, and only needed three points from their two games in hand on Sunday.

The odds were stacked against them when Catalans FC beat them 3-2 in their first game.

Captain Vama Mbeje of Wimbledon knew what was at stake and motivated his players. Wimbledon came out with guns blazing and managed to secure a 2-0 win in their next game.

The result saw them being crowned as the 2016 NFL League Champions, Bayern Munich finished second and Catalans third. Next up was the RnB Motors Knock-Out Cup.

The afternoon showed huge upsets as favourites Bayern Munich and Manchester United where knocked out in the quarter finals. Africa FC just managed to beat a fast paced Esperanzi 2-1 in the first semi-final, while Galatasary thrashed Catalans FC 4-2 in the second semi-final.

Africa FC and Galatasary faced each other in the final with just a goal separating the two sides. Africa FC walked away victorious as the Knockout Champions.

Alphonso Harry scooped the League Player of the Season award for the second year running. Other awards included League Golden Glove taken by Andile Zulu and League Golden Boot awarded to Riaad Ally.

Vama Mbeje was selected as Knockout Player of the Season, the Knockout Golden Glove winner was Ayo Esoul, and Knock Out Golden Boot was awarded to Joe Khuma.

Junior Goal Keeper of the Season was handed to Edwin Xumalo and Xolani Zwele was awarded Junior Player of the season.

Fair Play Award, Dortmund FC, Managers Award went to Sam Esoula, and Freelance Player of the Season was Lungelo Zulu.

Addressing the current condition of the Paradise Astro Turf, NFL will be investing in the future of the court. The is court is almost five years old and it has favourable wear and tear.

“We plan on taking care of all repairs and renovations needed at our own expense. We realize what an impact this league has on our youth and we plan on maintaining that,” said event organiser, Terrence Chetty.

The NFL thanks all sponsors, affiliates and executives and wish them well over the festive season.
