Durban ‘animals’ wrestle tough
This was the first time in 10 years that a Durban club competed along with 70 other wrestlers.
The last in the four-tournament Battlefields Wrestling tournament was held in Glencoe on Saturday with special guests from Durban lighting up the map.
The guests, cage fighters and martial arts exponents, were here to try their hand at grip and grapple and the local wrestlers made sure they had a warm welcome on and off the mat. This was the first time in 10 years that a Durban club competed along with 70 other wrestlers.
Adriaan Kriek of the local Rhinos Club was elected wrestler of the day. He wrestled like an old hand and with controlled aggression and superior technique, he out-classed his opponents. All the Rhinos earned medals. These included: T Basson, T Brown, T van der Merwe, D Guelpa, D Botha, JC Botha, T Bezuidenhout, J Bezuidenhoud (Jnr), J Bezuidenhout (Snr), L Kruger, K Basson, W Husselman, R Basson, A Kriek, JJ du Plessis, B Shangweni, N Shongwe, S Nglovu, K Senekal, D Steyn, Jenny Stolz and Z Coetzer. The Rhinos are fresh from a domination performance at the KZN championships in Newcastle on October 29. Club members produced 13 KZN champions. With Dillan Guelpa, Theuns van der Merwe and Kyle Senekal, all put in impressive performances on the mat. The Rhinos team spirit and camaraderie made this a special achievement.
